When planning a wedding there are literally thousands of decisions to be made- colors, themes, favors, food, venue, vendors, cake, dresses, stationary, flowers, just to name a few! We all know the big ones, but most of the time it’s the small things that can sneak up on a couple during planning. So today I wanted to talk about one of those small details, that in my opinion, is one of the big things that will live on long after the clean up is over- the first dance song.
I love music. I was in choir, played the clarinet in middle school band, grew up jamming to Whitney Houston cassettes with my Mama, have always played “name that tune/artist” with my Daddy on car rides, and love attending concerts. My iTunes library is filled with thousands of songs in various genres spanning several decades, even those beyond my lifetime! I feel that music can take you back to a feeling, a moment in time, and say the words you can never seem to string together. Therefore coming up with just one song to summarize a relationship full of “moments” and “feelings” can be extremely difficult.
Luckily for me, there’s Eric Church.
We first met in college. We were introduced by my fabulous roommates anxious to let me hear their hometown hero belt out their favorite tunes. I instantly felt a connection with this artist and of course had to share this new found love with my lover, now husband, Evan. Next thing you know we were buying tickets for our first Eric Church concert at the North Carolina State Fair and that was all it took, we were hooked!
^^Our First EC Concert October 2009 Raleigh, NC (Going on our 2nd year of dating-Babies!!)
^^Our Most Recent EC Concert February 2017 Duluth, GA (Going on our 3rd year of marriage-wow, where does the time go!!!)
In the same year as our first concert Eric released his second album “Carolina” which is full of favorites that can be heard on the radio and at every one of his concerts. However, there’s one track at the end of the record that most people have never heard- that’s mine and Evan’s song. I don’t remember the first time I heard it, but I remember the two of us listening to it together and both smiling at the fact that if we didn’t know any better we’d of thought he wrote it exclusively for us- it was that perfect. The song: “You Make it Look So Easy”. So naturally when the time came along years later for us to plan our wedding, it was a no brainer what our first dance song would be.
So on October 4, 2014 we shared our first dance as husband and wife swaying together and singing to each other the words of our favorite song:
“I got a hard head, I was born that way
And that makes me wrong more than I say
But I thank God you got a hard head too
I guess he must have known you’d need that to get us through
Cause when it comes to lovin’ me
Baby you make it look so easy”
Like I said I love music. I love weddings and I love the sentimental moments in life that you can treasure forever. So I challenge all the brides that have their heads spinning from all the decision making of planning, to not just settle for the latest lovey dovey song to fill in the line on your DJ’s worksheet, but to actually take the time to find that perfect first dance song just for you and your groom. Since I’m not a poet I’ll let a line from Corey Smith’s “First Dance” say it for me:
“This is the first dance, but it won’t be the last. Timeless moments like this, they won’t ever be a thing of the past”
